Fedora is a fast, stable, and powerful operating system for
everyday use built by a worldwide community of friends. It's completely
free to use, study, and share.
Fedora is an Unix-based Operating System, which means it is available for no cost. You can share it with friends. In addition to this, Fedora uses applications that are developed under various licenses which allows you to use them free of cost ! So You don't need to spend a dime any feature you need. (and if you are ready to pay, 3rd party developers can allow you theirs !)
What will attract you ?
1. Lets Say you are a Programmer or developer :
Fedora comes with built-in Compilers or Interpreters for many languages. In addition to that, It has provided packages for applications for Software and/or Web application development.
Check out following links :
2. Lets say you are a commerce person :
If you think shifting to fedora (or an other Linux based O/s) will make you loose features like Office suite, Adobe Acrobat and such daily needed Business apps, The open source community has provided many "options" ( which you seldom get under windows environment ). Nowadays Linux O/s come with pre-installed applications.
3. Arts person huh? :
No need to Worry that you are going to miss the Adobe Photoshop or many legendary softwares like that. Linux has a native app called GIMP. It has very helpful community there. Plus you will find many video, audio and image processing apps at your service. Some of them are :
- Agave for automatically generating color schemes
- Blender for 3D modeling, animation, rendering and post-production
- Inkscape, a vector graphics editor
- Shotwell for managing photographs
- Scribus for professional-quality document layout
- Xournal, a sketching and document annotation program for tablet PCs
- Dia for creating flowcharts and diagrams
- ...and more!
4. Gaming ? :
Fedora has many featured games. Plus if you miss Win32 bit games, Wine Comes in handy. It is an application that emulates Windows environment into Fedora.
5. A common, nobody Person :
Well still Fedora can help you "nobody"s often do the "Listen-MP3-Watch-movie-convert-video" stuff. And you can tons of apps waiting for you. You can choose from many flavors and all the one that suits you best.
6. Robustness :
Not just Fedora but all the Linux Operating Systems support any computer structure you have.( If your Grand-dad had a "PC" and you inherited it, try installing Windows 7. :-) . ) If you check the minimum system requirements required for fedora, you will be surprised how optimum resources it uses ( but If you can afford a FORD why should go for the Bullock cart eh? ). In addition to that Fedora comes with good support for external peripherals like printers, audio devices, fax machines etc. This helps when you need an urgent photo print and you borrowed your friend's printer but he lost the driver CD (Intentionally? No I don't think so ! Wait do I ?).
Now this was goody-goody cute side, Now the harder part :
Not just Fedora but all UNIX operating systems come with technical needs. after you have installed it properly ( i know not yet !) you have to configure it. This will hurt your brain a little when you don't get things as you want. But I would like to state here that Unix operating systems are highly configurable and that's why tomorrow you can launch an operating systems of your own name !
The trickiest part is that the software creators assume you have installed basic files required for installations. Mostly it doesn't bug you but it gives pain in neck when you have all resources meeting but a minor 2 KB file is missing.
But to overcome this "we" recommend that you have a permanent dial-up connection at your side ( I know you can afford one this morning I read your Facebook updates !) and rest I will tell you in next tutorial ).
Epilogue ( I know I know but writing -here typing- is no $#!+ job ! )
This article doesn't include all dimensions of fedora. It has many falls (I am half-sleepy)
Fedora Comes in all shapes and colors, choose yours :
Fedora has many versions you can Take a look at here. Or simply go here.
My personal favorite is 32bit DVD. But if you are unsure to install it on your PC, Go for 32Bit Live CD. It will boot from your CD-Rom, won't install on your system and give you a hassle-free live experience.
